How important is it to select a good Lean Six Sigma project?

A good Lean Six Sigma project will have a strong contribution to achieving the strategic goals of the company, great collaboration to increase internal and external customer satisfaction.

It will also have a high chance of completion by the deadline, great impact for the improvement of the organization's performance and use of appropriate metrics to measure the results that must be achieved in the project.

Where do good ideias for a Lean Six Sigma project come from?

The ideas of good Lean Six Sigma project can be obtained from several sources, such as:

  • Production volume indicators;
  • Productivity or waste,
  • Problems related to the variability of processes or product quality;
  • Costs that have a high impact on the company budget;
  • Complaints and results of research carried out with internal and external clients;
  • Results of benchmarking studies;
  • Opportunities for improvement of products or processes with high production volume;
  • Opportunities identified from process mapping or value stream mapping.

After creating a bank of ideas for Lean Six Sigma projects, it is necessary to prioritize the ideas by evaluating the impact of each project's on the strategic objectives of the company.

Criteria such as strong contribution to the achievement of strategic goals of the company, strong contribution to increase internal and external customer satisfaction, high chance of completion within the established period, high return on investment and  important knowledge that will be generated for company the good examples of criteria to use in prioritization.

What do I need to set my project?

Briefly, a Lean Six Sigma project needs reliable data, a well-defined metric to define the performance gap, relevant financial gains, and team commitment.

You need to observe your time horizon - not that your goal should not be audacious, but it must be achievable. Let me give you a very simple example: imagine, you found a football club today and define that in five years it will be in the first national division. What is the chance of that happening? Nearly impossible, isn’t it?

This is an important point! The most frequent mistake made in project selection is a very complex choice - the complexity must be sufficient to make it meaningful to the company.

However, it should not be so complicated that it can’t be completed in a period of four to six months for a Green Belt or six to eight months for a Black Belt.

Here's a tip: If at the initial stage of development, the project shows itself too broad or too simple, the scope of work should be changed immediately.

If you realize that you have a very broad intention, you can divide it in smaller plans.

If you made it this far, I have a question to ask you...
