Do you know what the Minitab program does?

Statistics is a field of study that is widely used in many fields. In the public sphere, it is used for demographic, territorial and economic analysis, as well as in its curricular integration in research centers and universities. It is also applied in private, financial and business sectors.

Much of this high and constant demand for statistical resources - which, at present, is still growing with the help of specialized software - was mainly due to computational advances that made it easier to use and interpret.

What's the use of statistics?

Before you know Minitab, it is important that you know the reason for its application. To do this, just think of any problem you have in your daily life - be it academic or professional.

Have you stopped to reflect on how many variables interfere with this problem, the process it is part of and its outcome? That's a lot of variables, isn’t it?

So, in order to efficiently relate all this gigantic amount of data and information to a process, statistical studies are applied - which aim to optimize the entire decision-making process.

Decisions made with scientific support are far more effective than decisions made on the basis of insight and opinion. Effective in achieving greater performance, quality, speed and profitability.

A structured decision-making process based on a scientific and statistical method aims to relate all these variables - including those that are not so significant - to inform their users about the best way to act on a problem and the whole process so as to get the best result.

But our intellectual capacity to use this resource quickly is very low, and it was to meet this demand that statistical computer programs have emerged and are increasingly being used today.

Why use the Minitab program?

Minitab was created with the aim of being a software to facilitate the decision-making process based on complex statistical analysis in a much more organized, accessible, easy and fast way.

Currently, this software is one of the most used by sectors of quality and continuous improvement in large corporations. Its own name has already become a reference for use in programs such as Six Sigma.

The Minitab program has a rich yet simple and dynamic platform that, although similar to Excel, has a much higher level of application for the use of numerous statistical and quality tools, such as: Histogram, Diagram Ishikawa and Pareto, Control Letters, Correlation and Regression Tests, Boxplot, ANOVA, DOE, and an infinite range of other possibilities.

Okay, I know, with all this vast array of tools possible, you might be thinking that you could only use them with months of study, right?

However, to eliminate this concept of complex statistical studies, a high level of mastery of the Minitab program is necessary. Not only does it have facilities to manipulate your data much more efficiently, but you can also create elegant presentations and reports automatically in Word itself if you wish.

What tools can be used in the Minitab program?

As we saw in the previous item, there are numerous tools for analyzing and solving problems that can be used in the program.

All of them applied with one goal in common: to collaborate in a simple way for the best solution to complex business problems - and what tools would these be?

  • Basic statistics: make descriptive statistical studies, apply hypothesis tests, check confidence intervals and normality tests;
  • Regression and ANOVA: know the relationships between the variables of a problem and identify the main causes that affect it;
  • Quality tools: check the validity of your measurement system with MSA, define the ability of your process to meet your specification limits with SPC;
  • Experiment Planning: Adjust and configure the various operation possibilities that your system has with DOE and determine the most cost-effective and productive way to operate it;
  • Letters of control: control the stability of your process and act preventively in combating its variations;
  • Reliability and Survival: Examine the durability of a new product with distribution analysis and accelerated life testing and learn the key features that result in this projection.

When we talk about projects, we think about something of great magnitude. This is a mistake, because a project may be involved with small day-to-day activities. We can cite some examples in solving internal problems, negotiating with suppliers, delivering products, implementing systems and strategies. The correct management of the projects brings benefits to the organization, being able to be used in problem-solving. Good project management defines precisely the decision-making processes and also identify causes and effects.
