The consulting market has grown every day, and many people have decided to bet on this business to try to achieve professional success. Through this, the initial question of this article arises: what are the essential functions of a consultant? What should a good consultant do to stand out? What are the basic principles?
With this in mind, I have listed four basic assignments of a consultant during a project that we will talk about in this article:
- What is the role of a consultant within a consulting project?
- Develop and execute the project in line with the client
- Make sure that the solution meets the expectations of the customer's result
- Maintain clear and transparent communication with the customer
- Maintain the client and the team that will work for the project aligned
These are the basic four premises to execute a good project, ensuring the satisfaction of both parts at the end of the process. But how to guarantee these promises are fulfilled? That's exactly what we're going to see now! Let's go?
What is the role of a consultant within a consulting project?
Consultancies are a very important step for health and a consistent execution of a project or even for an organization, in general. Consultants are the professionals responsible for executing such projects, analyzing the information that will be studied and proposing improvements, so that at the end of such a process, it is possible to improve results or establish quality management.
1 - Design and execute the project aligned with the customer
What has been sold is what should be delivered! This is the basic mantra of a good consultant! You can't make promises you can't keep just to get the project or you will lose credibility in the market!
Another key point is to define the project schedule in agreement with the client, in order to ensure that the deadlines will be fulfilled as established. After all, no one likes to have their expectations frustrated.
Still in this step, you should avoid additional costs, after all, the costs were defined within what was proposed. However, if necessary, you must align the new costs with the customer so that they are aware of what will be spent.
To put a closure on this phase here comes a very important issue that is the focus! As a consultant, you should focus on the main problem. Companies boil of opportunities for new projects, new improvements to be implemented and new gains. But you can't bite off more than you can chew, can you?
If you lose focus, everything that has been combined can collapse, the timeline gets lost, and this will only generate dissatisfaction. So focus on what was proposed and worry about delivering what was promised!

2 - Make sure that the solution meets the expectations of the client
After guaranteeing the delivery of what was proposed, it is necessary to ensure that the project will generate the desired result, after all, that's why someone hires a consultancy service.
Therefore, it's important to be very careful in setting the goals so that in the eyes of the client the project is successful. Price, earnings, time, all of this should be analyzed while defining the purpose of the project.
This point is quite critical, because even if the results of the project are good, if it stays below the combined can generate dissatisfaction. If you promised 15 thousand of gain, although you manage to get 10 thousand, the client could be dissatisfied since what was promised was not fulfilled.
In this way, if in the course of the project you realize that the goal may not be beat, you should immediately sit down with the client and align the information, proposing corrective solutions to be able to keep what was initially settled, or setting new parameters.
To close this step, we come to the main point for business, money! Directly or indirectly, the project must have financial results. Whether through increased sustainability, reduced environmental impact or reduced risk of accidents, the results need to be monetized, measured in some way that will generate financial impact for the company.
3 - Keep Communication Clear and Transparent with the Client
Communication is the root cause of most business problems, and that's not news to anyone, right? Therefore, the consultant must have a good communication with all the members of the project.
Keeping constant project updates will reduce the client's anxiety and distrust as much as the project generates results. Demonstrate the steps, the improvements already achieved, the difficulties encountered, all this will strengthen the relationship with your client, generating more trust and credibility in your work.
During the execution of a consulting project, conflicts may occur with company employees. This is due to the fact that the consultant is a change agent, often needing to have a firm grip on the implementation time. But, as Carlos Brito, CEO of Ambev says, if you have to upset someone, get in the way of those who deliver less.
That way, you always have to walk side by side with your client and keep communication clear, so that in case of conflicts, your client is aware of the events to intervene in a way that does not cause delays in the project.
Another reason why you should keep your contractor close at hand is because the consultant is a source of knowledge. A good consultant is concerned with conveying the managerial knowledge that he possesses to the company in such a way that the company does not become dependent on it.
This ensures that the institution will be able to continue the project, being able to grow on its own. After all, the consultancy is temporary, it is not something permanent inside the companies. Therefore, clear communication is fundamental for this knowledge to be well transmitted.
To close this step, a good relationship with the team is fundamental to keep everyone engaged and focused on the goal, everyone needs to get the idea! This will ensure that everyone continues with the advances designed throughout the execution.
4 - Maintain the client's team that will work on behalf of the project aligned
Still on the communication, it is extremely important to keep the client's team that will work on the project aligned! After all, part of the execution will be the responsibility of this team, so it needs to be aligned on the goals and moments of the project.
But what is this "project team"? Maybe you're asking yourself that, and it's simple. A consultant does not work alone, you will have project supporters within the company, who will be responsible for assisting you in pursuit of the ultimate goal!
The alignment of this team is also fundamental, as it will be responsible for continuing the process after the implementation of the solution, so they need to understand the process as a whole.
To close with the golden key, keeping the team engaged is important because everyone needs to be paddling in the same direction! Otherwise, the results may be compromised, right?
